Economic Development

How We Serve

The Southeast Gas commitment to community growth reflects its continued investment in Alabama, to support the State’s economic and customer growth. Our overarching priority of sustained regional economic growth is segmented into three broad service offerings: Economic Development, Community Development, and Residential Development and Housing.

The company continues to effectively manage its expenses in line with customer growth, allowing greater flexibility with incentives, rebates, and loan programs available for new and expanding industrial and residential projects.

Southeast Gas owners are 14 cities within the company’s service area: Abbeville, Andalusia, Brundidge, Dothan, Elba, Enterprise, Eufaula, Fort Deposit, Greenville, Luverne, Opp, Ozark, and Troy. Each of these cities maintains Board representation for the company, and many Southeast Gas Board members are city mayors or city council or commission members. Together with the Southeast Gas workforce of almost 200 employees in 15 locations, the standard for service excellence from this utility is unprecedented.

The company’s expansive network of underground pipelines throughout Southeast Alabama makes the company the largest public gas system in the country with more than 1,700 miles of distribution mains and more than 575 miles of transmission lines.

Over the last five years, Southeast Gas customer growth increased approximately 5 percent. While the level of expenses has increased, the increases are in line with customer growth and are reasonable to recover in the cost of service.

Natural gas has inherent energy efficient measures that help maximize your bottom line, while providing the comfort and reliability that your customers and employees have come to expect.

Because a typical commercial building’s energy use accounts for around 30% of operating costs, Southeast Gas and natural gas applications give you greater impact over these controllable costs. With natural gas, you’ll get more value for your investment. Here’s the Natural Gas difference:

  • Environmental and energy savings benefits
  • Financial savings for the building owner
  • Improved building operations
  • Reduced operating and maintenance costs
  • Fewer greenhouse gases than coal or oil.
  • Virtually no emissions of sulfur dioxide or particulate matter.
  • Direct delivery to your business, with a much higher efficiency rate than electric.
  • As a high-density energy source, natural gas works harder yet produces less waste than alternative sources.

Economic Development

The Southeast Gas approach to Economic Development promotes collaboration with other utility partners, state leadership, local economic developers, city and county government, industrial consultants, and other stakeholders to foster growth, resilience, and improved quality of life in the region. Job creation and infrastructure development are priorities, but as a utility, Southeast Gas is also mindful of environmental sustainability and technological advancements as we offer services to help Alabama attract and retain businesses.

Community Development

Moving alongside local leaders and helping enhance Southeast Gas “hometown” communities is an integral part of the company’s Community Development service. The company collaborates with educational institutions to explore and create programs that provide training and education in fields related to the natural gas industry, as well as skills related to other industries. Additionally, customized services within the community development arena focus on community engagement and social responsibility, as Southeast Gas addresses the needs and concerns of each area individually rather than approaching needs with a “one-size-fits-all” program.

Residential Development and Housing

Convenient access to natural gas is a priority for Southeast Gas, and the company understands the need for affordable, sustainable housing throughout the region. Through our work with local, regional, and national housing developers and builders, Southeast Gas has a keen interest and understanding of the demographic trends, lifestyle preferences, and amenities that are essential for residents in cities and towns of varying locations and sizes. The company’s service includes rebate and incentive packages that are customized by project to allow the most affordable and accessible housing possible in the Southeast Gas communities.
