Serving Alabama’s First RNG Facility

Southeast Gas, in conjunction with NextEra Energy and Coffee County Landfill, recently placed into service Alabama’s first renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility. The facility is located in New Brockton, Alabama, directly within the Southeast Gas service territory.

After being approached by NextEra Energy in 2022, Southeast Gas committed to working alongside the company to provide a path and market for the landfill waste methane which is captured and converted to RNG. Southeast Gas established criteria by which the RNG would meet its Gas Quality and Biomethane standards in order to be received into the Southeast Gas system. Further, Southeast Gas established criteria for ongoing gas quality monitoring. Gas Quality is monitored 24×7 in order to ensure safe, efficient and reliable operations. RNG is the highest value product that can be produced from landfill gas, making this a win-win for all entities involved.

Second Facility

Southeast Gas is committed to a second RNG project in Jack, Alabama, as it strives to diversify supply sources and take advantage of new markets. This facility will capture, refine, and clean methane from high grade industrial food waste in partnership with Green Gas and Wayne Sanderson Farms. BioMethane projects like these align with the company’s dedication to clean, affordable, and safe energy that is produced at home in Alabama.

Economic & Community Impact

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other sustainable initiatives, these projects provide economic benefits to the area. The construction and operation of the Coffee County RNG facility added approximately 40 jobs and are expected to capture over 16,500 metric tons of landfill methane, according to NextEra Energy Resources.

What is RNG?

RNG, also known as biomethane or biogas, undergoes a refining process that removes contaminants, making it clean and efficient to place into a traditionally sourced natural gas system. It can be produced from multiple methane sources, such as the Coffee County Landfill. It can also be sourced through wastewater sludge, animal waste, and other organic waste. RNG offers multiple benefits, such as reducing the environmental impact of organic waste and contributing to the growing energy needs of our state, country, and the world. Southeast Gas continues to seek ways to utilize new technologies as part of its commitment to providing clean energy and strong communities.

Established in 1952 with a primary mission to help communities experience industrial growth, Southeast Gas is committed to reliably and efficiently supplying natural gas to customers throughout Southeast Alabama. The company serves more than 33,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in 36 communities, and is owned by 14 cities in Southeast Alabama: Abbeville, Andalusia, Brundidge, Dothan, Elba, Enterprise, Eufaula, Fort Deposit, Greenville, Headland, Luverne, Opp, Ozark, and Troy.
