Troy, Alabama – Southeast Gas recently hit a major achievement, reaching 500,000 safe working hours, a milestone accomplished on February 24, 2026, after beginning the effort on October 3, 2024. This marks only the second time in the company’s 74-year history that it has reached this mark.
To celebrate, employees from across the company gathered in Troy, AL on April 30 for a luncheon recognizing the collective effort behind the achievement.
While natural gas is widely regarded as a safe and reliable energy source, the work required to deliver it carries inherent risks. Southeast Gas leadership emphasized that a strong safety culture is what makes milestones like this possible.
“Safety is our number one priority. It guides every decision we make, because at the end of the day, what matters most is making sure our people get home safe to their families,” said Southeast Gas President and CEO Greg Henderson. “Around here, safety’s not just something we talk about, it’s how we take care of one another. Everyone looks out for each other, and that’s the reason we’re able to celebrate this milestone.”
Building on that momentum, the company has now set its sights on an even more ambitious goal: one million safe working hours.
The celebration also served as a fitting backdrop to recognize one of the individuals who has helped shape Southeast Gas’s safety culture for decades. Longtime Safety Coordinator Mark Fowler was recently named the Alabama Natural Gas Association’s 2026 Gas Person of the Year.
Alabama Natural Gas Association President Heath Reed praised Mark Fowler’s impact across the industry, noting his 31-year career and commitment to training and mentorship. “The Alabama Natural Gas Association is proud to honor Mark Fowler as the 2026 Gas Person of the Year. He has been dedicated to the safety of natural gas employees across the state and was instrumental in creating the Fast Track Training program, which provides valuable instruction for workers statewide. He has also helped train hundreds of employees through his leadership at the ANGA Operations Conference and Fall Workshop each year.”
The recognition comes at a meaningful moment, as Mark Fowler prepares to retire in July after more than 30 years with Southeast Gas and a career defined by service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to safety.
Casey Piland will step into the role following his retirement, bringing experience and a shared commitment to continuing the strong safety culture Mark Fowler helped build.
As colleagues reflected on his career during the luncheon, one message stood out — the same one Mark Fowler has shared for years: “Always remember, Think Safe, Work Safe.”
